Has your tooth been hurting? You might’ve already called your emergency dentist and have an appointment coming up soon. However, the pain might be too much, so you might be looking for home remedies that offer a temporary solution. If you want to get relief for the time being, here are four things that you can try.

Apply a Cold Pack

A classic way to ease pain is to use a cold pack. The cooler temperature slightly numbs the area by reducing blood flow. Better yet, you can make one easily at home by putting ice in a plastic baggie and wrapping it in a cloth. Hold it against your cheek for 15-minute intervals, and it may feel better than before.

Rinse with Warm Salt Water

You may add dashes of salt to your meals, but a tablespoon can be all you need for your toothache. By adding it to a glass of warm water, you can use it as mouthwash to clear bacteria and debris from your mouth. It can also reduce inflammation, making it a great choice if you have this symptom as well.

Slowly Chew a Clove of Garlic

Garlic gives a lovely flavor, but it has natural antibacterial properties you can use to your advantage. It can target bacteria and reduce your tooth pain in some cases. All you have to do is chew a clove slowly and leave it on the affected area. You can also mash it into a paste with some salt and apply it where needed.

Use Real Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract contains alcohol, which can ease your dental discomfort. It can numb the area and support healing. Simply dab it on, and you’re all set. However, before you use this tip, double-check that you are using the real deal. Imitation versions won’t be as effective.

These home remedies can be great to try while you wait for your emergency visit. However, remember that they don’t replace professional treatment. Your dentist will get to the bottom of your toothache and give you the long-lasting solution you need to get back your pain-free smile.
