They are designed to fit snugly into your mouth, helping you enjoy a wide range of foods and feel more confident smiling. However, if you are wearing a new pair or if they are ill-fitting, then you might notice you have some sores. They can cause discomfort, so here’s what brought them about and how to get rid of them.

What’s Causing My Denture Sores in the First Place?

As was mentioned above, there are several things that can cause sores. The main one is that you aren’t fully adjusted to your dentures if you recently got them. Your gum tissue can become irritated and develop these spots. If you have had your prosthetic for a while, then it might be ill-fitting and create pressure points that can lead to discomfort.

For some, it may be a piece of food that got stuck underneath the restoration. Popcorn, nuts, and seeds are some items that can increase your risk of this, but the stray morsel can lead to bacteria buildup if you don’t clean it in time.

How Can I Relieve My Denture Sores?

Before you can start to get relief from your denture sores, you should first get rid of what’s causing them. You can get them relined or give yourself some grace if they are brand new. Sticking closer to your oral hygiene routine can also be helpful, but you can try out these tips to help relieve the painful spots you developed:

Soak your prosthetic during the night in water or a special cleaner.

Rinse with warm salt water to reduce inflammation and wash away harmful bacteria.

Take pain relievers and follow the directions on the bottle to get the correct dosage.

Should I Visit My Dentist About My Denture Sores?

Many people don’t generally need to visit the dentist about denture sores as they typically go away on their own. However, if an ill-fitting prosthetic is the cause, then you will need to have an appointment to get it snug once again. Not only that, if you notice any of the following, then you should give them a call:

Your sores get larger or are bigger than normal

They last for longer than two weeks

You see signs of infection and are discolored

In the end, any concern you have is reason enough to pick up the phone; that way, you can feel confident knowing there isn’t an underlying issue going on. If there is, then you can get it fixed right away and get toward enjoying your full smile.

About the Author

Dr. Dominic Carlson earned his dental degree from Creighton University.
