You might brush your teeth, chew gum, or drink water to rinse the flavor away. While you are getting relief, it’s important that you find the culprit for this symptom. Although some may not necessarily be an immediate issue, others can turn into a dental emergency when left untreated. Here are four reasons that you might have a bitter taste in your mouth.

1.) Poor Dental Hygiene

As you wake up in the morning, does it feel like the symptom is worse? If so, then your oral hygiene habits might need a closer look. When you don’t properly brush and floss, you may start to develop bacterial buildup in your mouth. Over time, this can cause the taste to become stronger, so be sure not to skip any steps in your routine and don’t forget to scrub your tongue as well.

Doing this will also help you avoid dental problems later on. Cavities and gum disease can start mildly, but cause serious complications when left to their own devices.

2.) GERD or Acid Reflux

A person experiences acid reflux when their stomach acid flows backward into their esophagus. Other symptoms aside from a sour taste in the mouth are indigestion and a burning sensation in the abdomen or chest. Having this condition on occasion isn’t necessarily an issue, but if you have frequent episodes, then it may be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

3.) Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is a condition where you don’t produce enough saliva, which can lead to an unpleasant taste. It can be caused by certain medications, autoimmune disease, smoking, and alcohol, to name a few. While you may think you are just parched, this creates a perfect environment for plaque to thrive.

They will be able to linger on your teeth, attacking the structure and causing decay or gum disease when not cleaned off. Thankfully, by drinking plenty of water, you can keep your mouth moist and wash away harmful bacteria.

4.) Some Medications and Supplements

Certain medicines and supplements you take can also be the reason for the bitter taste in your mouth. When you take them, they get absorbed into your body, but they can be excreted into your saliva. While you may be able to ignore it, if it’s intense and persistent, then you can talk to a medical professional about it. They can help you come up with the next steps to see how you can stop it.

In the end, a bitter taste in your mouth can be uncomfortable to deal with, but it doesn’t hurt to talk to your dentist about it. This can rule out oral health issues; that way, you can get pointed in the right direction to the relief you deserve.

About the Author

Dr. Dominic Carlson earned his dental degree from Creighton University.
